Exercise with Solution-2: VSEPR Model

Question:

Draw a correct Lewis Structure for SF4 and decide on its electron domain
and molecular geometries then estimate the F−S−F bond angle.

Solution:

Based on the rules previouly mentioned, the the correct Lewis Structure of SF4 is: sf4-lewis

The central atom (S) has 5 electron domains; the electron-domain geometry is: sf4-trigonal

Since there is a non-bonding pair of electrons, the molecular geometry is: sf4-molecular-geometry

In this geometry, there are two angles; 120° and 180° sf4-molecular-geometry-2

However, because of the non-bonding pair, these angles are a little bit different.
